Parents know the importance of math skills.
Math is around us every day.
Parents know kids need to practice math.
But we get tired of the complaining and the whining. The dragging of the feet and arguing. So we throw our hands in the air and hope they know enough to get by.
I am one of the lucky homeschooling moms whose kids love math, and it seems to come easy to them.
However, I know that they need practice.
Recent scientific studies show that practice is what makes kids understand math and enjoy it more, which makes sense because it comes easier.
Neurology research shows that the reason you are good at what you practice is due to the fact that different kinds of practice activate different neural connections. (Sciencedaily.com)
I started out with the intention of finding a program that would keep my kids’ attention, provide them with a challenge, and provide daily practice.
Here is what worked for us.
Smartick is an online learning program for math.
Their goal is to increase mental agility.
I started using this program first with my upcoming fifth-grade homeschooled son.
I explained to him that we needed to add in 15 minutes of math practice a day.
He is used to doing most of his work on the computer and was willing to give it a try.
The first thing I noticed is that Smartick kept his attention.
The problems and concepts were varied. It was not 100 of the same operation over and over. The variety kept him engaged.
He also enjoyed the immediate feedback. He liked knowing right away if he had answered the problem correctly.
A Mom’s Point of View
One of the things I loved the most about Smartick is that the material adapted to his level.
After the pre-test, he was able to complete the work, but some problems were still challenging.
The level kept him interested because it was not too easy or too hard. He was encouraged and challenged.
But my absolute favorite thing about Smartick has been the e-mails about his progress.
As a homeschooling mom of 5, reminders and alerts are always a good thing. I can let things slide if I do not have some accountability.
Not only does Smartick tell me my child’s progress, but I am also alerted if he did not finish a session.
This keeps us both accountable to putting in the work.
Pros vs. Cons
The basis and material of this online learning resource is amazing.
I have used lots of math practice websites over the years and have found some to provide excellent material and some to just be ok.
I can tell you with an assurance that this is an online math tutor for your child.
I have tried the program for over a month now and have decided that we are sticking with it.
This summer the kids will have one reading assignment and then 15 minutes of Smartick each.
Smartick is no work for me, yet provides valuable math instruction for my kids.
The only con is the price. It can seem a little pricey, especially for homeschooling families.
Yet, the alternative of hiring a tutor or struggling with your child on math work can be expensive as well.
This is a program that I can use from the comfort of my home and with all of my children throughout the course of the day.
For our family, it is worth the price.
First of all, Smartick offers a free 15-day trial.
If you decide to continue with the program, there are monthly, quarterly, and yearly options.
While you do save some money on the yearly option, I normally opt for a smaller plan just because I am always evaluating our homeschool and the programs we use.
If you pay monthly for 1 child it is $49.99/month.
For 2 children, it is $44.99/month, and for 3 children or more, it is &39.99/month.
Once you have access to the program, your child will complete an evaluation.
Then, it is time to learn. Each day I log in my boys and they finish their work.
It is simple, convenient, and efficient. A homeschool mom’s dream.
